May 1: Sitting at the Window

Sitting at the window in our home office

with the curtain drawn most of the way,

I see only a foot-wide sliver of our yard

and little bits of our neighbor yards,

but even in this narrowed view of life

there is more beauty, drama and wonder

than I would ever be able to describe

over the course of decades. Just now

I see a robin, two chickadees, a rabbit,

at least three kinds of flowers, shrubs,

a dozen trees, rocks and fences, clouds,

houses, and a gentle breeze that sets

everything in motion again and again.
